The percentage of fat mass and muscle mass in your body is an important factor for determining performance. Too little fat mass is not only bad for your health but also reduces your performance capacity (including more muscle breakdown, reduced resistance to infections). A fat percentage that is too high creates an increased risk of injuries due to increased pressure on the tendons, joints and muscles.
If you do power training, you may also notice an effect on your muscle mass. At Bakala Academy they use a DXA-scan (Discovery W – Hologic) to measure your muscle and fat mass, in combination with a 12-point skin-fold measurement. A DXA-scan divides the body into three compartments: bone mass, fat-free mass and fat tissue. The major advantage compared to other methods is the information that is obtained about the health of the bone system.
