Sprained ankle


If the movement capacity of a joint is exceeded, but the ends of the bone stay in place, we refer to the resulting injury as a sprain.

  • The sports person is in pain and has difficulty using his joints
  • There may be swelling and bruising

Elevate the sprained ankle and cool thoroughly with ice. A pressure band can be used to reduce swelling. Rest properly before you start to run again. See a specialist if you suspect a break.

  • Be aware of where you’re running, particularly if you’re on an uneven surface.
  • Be careful of the transition between the footpath and the soft verge.
